Day 2 - Central Historic Vienna

This morning, we'll be able to go for another fairly leisurely walk.

Votivkirche This beautiful cathedral was built as a symbol of gratitude in the later 19th century by Maximilian, the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph, after a failed assassination attempt on the emperor. Entry is free, if we want to visit. There is also a museum

Rathausplatz Vienna’s City Hall grounds hosts a large film festival through the summer. Movies don’t start until after sunset, but food and drink stalls are open all day.

Austrian Parliament. A tour of this lavish building is available, if we register in advance. We may decide it's enough to view it from the sidewalk!

Votivkirche

Maria-Theresien-Platz. This square, located between two imposing museums, is where we'll meet our tour for the afternoon.

Our tour will take about two hours, and it will end at St Stephen's Cathedral. We'll take the opportunity to visit this amazing site now. An entry ticket with an audio guide is included in our trip, but I recommend adding a climb up at least one of the North or South Towers (about $10-12). The upper platform of the North Tower can be reached by elevator, and the South Tower will require a climb of 343 steps! Areas of the cathedral such as the catacombs and the treasury can also be visited for additional costs.
