Day 18 - Liptovská Mara
Today we'll explore some attractions around Liptovská Mara, the lake next to Liptovský Mikuláš. Our loop isn't very efficient, but none of our driving legs are more than about 20 minutes.
Demänovská Cave of Liberty Our fist stop is a one-hour visit to one of the approximately 7500 caves in Slovakia. We’ll need our long sleeves for this, and sturdy shoes. It's possible that the tour will only be given in Slovak, but you can download a PDF guide in English. Entry $11, additional fee ($15!) for permission to take photos.
Liptovský Hrádok Castle & Manor Established in the 14th century, the castle and the manor built onto it was occupied for most of its history, but fell significantly into ruins during the 1900s. Restoration and reconstruction took place in the early 2000s, and the manor has been converted into a beautiful modern hotel.
After this tour, we'll drive around the north side of Liptovská Mara and stop for a bit of lunch at the lakeside Marina Liptov Restaurant.
Havránok Archaeological museum This open-air museum has reconstructed the Celtic settlement that was there between the 4th and 1st centuries BCE. Entry $6.
Lučanský waterfall Not too far from the archaeological museum, this waterfall is right in the middle of a small town. It's a lovely place to sit for an afternoon break.
